When it comes to job skills, clearly there are numerous job skills that are important. However, one particular skill stands out above all the rest. The most important job skill to have is one of being one time, and being on time consistently. If you are someone who likes to be on time consistently then your boss will love you. They will be willing to go above and beyond by teaching you new things, they will smile when they see you, and they will think of ways to keep you as an employee even if you are ready to move on, and they will keep you in mind should they want to expand their business. Good employees are hard to find. However, if you are not on time consistently your employer will be so focused on that one thing you are not doing and they will have a hard time focusing on all the wonderful things you are capable of doing.

As Americans we place a significant amount of importance on being on time to work on a consistent basis. As an executive function coach, I work with numerous students who have issues with time management. I have noticed that whenever I work with a student who reports having issues keeping a job, I typically find out that they are having issues keeping their job because they don’t show up on time.

Being on time in an employment situation shows your employer that you are ready to do the job you were hired to do when they asked you to do it. After all, they are paying you to use your skills during a specific time frame. If you show up late to work then you are not meeting your obligations and your employer may wonder if they can count on you. The action of being late may exclude you for a promotion, or it could put you at the top of the list for being laid off during difficult times. Showing up on time tells your boss that you value their time. Most important, being on time tells your employer that you value their business and their authority, leadership and knowledge.

Now that you understand the importance of being on time consistently, how can you make sure you are on time, every time? Make sure you wake up in time to do everything you need to do before you leave your home. It may be helpful to set an alarm so that you know what time you will need to leave your house so that you can get to work on time.

Due to COVID-19 many people are working from home or tele-commuting. This means that many meetings are being help on-line. Being on time to meetings is even more important in this situation. If your boss cannot see you in scheduled meetings they may wonder if you are getting your work done. The same level of importance applies to those on-line meetings. So, make sure you are on-time.
